About Us

Paragonah is located in Iron County,  4 miles from the County seat of Parowan.  It was settled in the early 1850's.  Parowan residents found meadows next to Red Creek that provided ideal locations for farming.  The settlement was first know as Red Creek.  In May of 1851 ruins of a city near Red Creek including adobe buildings, Indian artifacts and human bones were discovered.  This area became known as "The Mounds". The name was later changed to Paragoonah, an indian name which has been interpreted to have many meanings including "marshland", "many springs", "red water", and "many watering holes".   It is not known when the spelling was changed from "Paragoonah" to "Paragonah".
